Description

Climb the mountains to San Sebastian

The day begins with a transfer from your Puerto Vallarta resort aboard a comfortable vehicle, which will take you 4,500 feet high into the Sierra Madre Mountains to San Sebastian del Oeste. This former Spanish colonial town dates back to 1605 and it was a center of gold and silver mining for Mexico’s west coast.

Your knowledgeable bilingual guide will give you more insight into the history of this place once you begin your walking tour. More than 20,000 people lived in San Sebastian during its heyday as a rich mineral town, but its population slowly declined after Mexico’s revolution in 1910, forcing many to depart the area during the 10-year war. Following the exodus, the city’s colonial buildings and adobe structures remained unchanged over time, leaving the shell of the once-vibrant city behind for visitors like you to explore.

See more historical sights and enjoy lunch

As you wander through San Sebastian’s cobblestoned streets and plaza, admire the awe-inspiring structures to get a glimpse of Mexico’s colonial period. Follow your guide to one of the most iconic sites in the town — the Church of Saint Sebastian. Built in the Spanish Baroque style featuring Corinthian columns and ceiling frescoes, the church was constructed in 1608, before San Sebastian was designated as a town.

Your tour of San Sebastian will definitely give you an appetite, but luckily you’ll have an included lunch inside this picturesque town. Additionally, drinks are available throughout your full-day outing. When you finish exploring this magical town, return to your vehicle and take the ride back to your resort, with plenty of mountain views throughout your journey.
