Worthy Park Estate Rum Tour: A sensory exploration of Jamaican rum

Why is Jamaican rum unique? The people of Jamaica take great pride in their rum with its distinct aromas, colors and flavors. The unique “high ester” rum and double retort pot distilling process make the “funk” that Jamaican rum is known for. Jamaican rum flavor notes include berries, pineapple, caramel, wood and molasses and the colors range from rich dark rums to the popular overproof white rum.

Jamaican rum is closely tied to the history and culture of the island. Christopher Columbus and the Spanish colonizers started growing sugar cane in Jamaica in 1494 and brought slaves from Africa to tend the fields. This is where the production of rum began. Jamaica was declared a British Colony in 1670 and production of rum boomed, with plantations growing all over the island. In 1833 slave labor was abolished and the production of rum came almost to a halt. Today there are a handful of estates creating the famous and delicious export of Jamaica, including Worthy Park Estates.

The trip to Lluidas Vale in St. Catherine Parish is about an hour from Kingston, 40 kms or 25 miles. The journey brings you through hills and valleys and the gorgeous fields of sugar cane.
